Two and a half years ago, I walked into my pastor’s office for my first day of work as a youth intern. I had stayed up late the night before writing a list of ideas I wanted to pursue as the new youth intern. Shortly after our introductory meeting began, I pulled out my notebook full of ways I thought the youth ministry could improve, events and programs we could start, and where I thought we needed change. I had passion, but not much direction. Not many people I knew my age were spending sleepless nights coming up with creative solutions to problems that no one asked for. My pastor graciously and enthusiastically listened to all my ideas, and then he handed me a book called The Purpose Driven Youth Ministry by Doug Fields. The premise of the book is you must know why you do something before you do it. Your purpose should dictate everything you do. Every program, every event, every environment is dictated by your mission. Fast forward two and a half years and I still live by those beliefs.

I found that my two biggest passions in life, outside of my faith, are entrepreneurship and community. Fortunately for me, these two things often overlap. I love the art of entrepreneurship as it relates to people. I love brainstorming sessions, collaborating, creative thinking, networking, problem solving, designing, and marketing. I love failing and trying again with a better idea. I love helping people succeed in pursuing their own passion. It’s a beautiful thing when entrepreneurship and community come together.

The truth is, I didn’t think I was going to start a marketing company until the day I committed to doing it. Brandspark, like many of my ideas, seemed distant and crazy at the time. But the more time I spent on it, the more I realized just how feasible the business plan was and how passionate I was about helping people through marketing. God threw two incredible marketing internships in my lap in college. I got experience in social media marketing, email marketing, and web design through internships, freelance work, and countless hours of research. I received a degree in Business Management from Southeastern University. Southeastern gave me unique opportunities as well; through Southeastern I was able to go on a life-changing study abroad program focused on discipleship and leadership, be the student government Senator for Business, and create the Show Up Program for the college of business.

However, qualifications and experiences do not make a successful business. The question I have to ask myself and customers is, “What is the purpose?” Purpose funnels all the crazy ideas into a very simple and clarifying mission. Every decision from a social media post to the color of a logo is made with purpose in mind.

Unfortunately, most advertisements today get drowned out in our fast paced society. Your “Buy It Now” ad was quickly scrolled passed because you’re just another product using the same marketing schemes as everyone else in the industry. Your product may be the highest quality for the cheapest price, but if you can’t effectively communicate yourself to customers, you won’t have customers to begin with. Your purpose, your story, and your authentic brand is what your customers deserve to see, because people don’t buy what you do, they buy who you are. Authentic branding isn’t a false image or a misleading advertisement; it’s accurately presenting who you are and what you do to the public. If you feel like you have to mislead and misdirect people to get business, you probably shouldn’t be in business. Yvon Chouinard, founder and CEO of Patagonia, once said “Even if he or she isn’t aware of it, every individual spends an entire lifetime creating and evolving a personal image that others perceive.” The same is true for every company. Your company brand is continuously creating and evolving, whether you feel like you’re managing it or not.

Brandspark exists to help businesses authentically manage their brand through marketing. If you’re interested in authentically marketing your business, we'd love to sit down and talk with you. Getting behind other entrepreneur’s passion and purpose is always an adrenaline rush for us; using powerful marketing tools such as social media, web design, custom graphics, and email marketing is icing on the cake.
